Eligibility
Medicare Supplement insurance plans, offered by private insurance companies, are available to individuals who are legal U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have resided in the country for five consecutive years. To get a Medigap plan, individuals must already be enrolled in Parts A and B of Medicare.
Most states require individuals to be 65 or older, but there are some insurance carriers that offer plans to Medicare beneficiaries who are younger than 65. When you enroll in a Medigap plan during your open enrollment period, you have guaranteed issue rights regardless of any health conditions or health history.
However, individuals under the age of 65 may find their choices limited. Most states limit the coverage to Plan A, the most basic Medigap plan. While this plan is the basic coverage, these individuals may find they have to pay three times as much for the same coverage than someone 65 and over.
