Three Questions You Should Ask When Switching Medicare Plans

Updated: Jul 31

Medicare Advantages

If you're thinking of switching to a new Medicare Advantage or Supplement plan, these three questions will help you make the most informed choice. Make sure to ask them when you're sitting at the kitchen table with me discussing your options.

What Will My Share Of The Costs Be?

Each plan has it's own way of sharing medical costs with you. Some have you paying a low share but more often, others have you paying a higher share but only when you need it. How often you access services will help you determine which method is best for you. You could be paying co-pays of a set amount, or a percentage of total costs. This could be a huge difference in price.

Is There A Provider Network? If So, Are My Doctors On It?

Some people don't mind having to change doctors if necessary, while others feel very connected to their primary care doctor or to certain specialists that may have helped get them through tough times. If your plan has a doctor's network and you choose to get services outside of that network it could be quite costly.

Does This Plan Offer Extra Benefits I Could Use?

Original Medicare doesn't cover several important medical services such as prescription drugs, dental, hearing, and fitness. Many supplements and advantage plans are able to offer you expanded benefits you would otherwise have to pay for on your own. Figure out what the added benefits are of each plan and how important those benefits are to you.
